NCAVEO Chilbolton field campaign 2006

The NCAVEO 2006 field campaign in Chilbolton, Hampshire took place from June 13th to June 23rd. The experiment provided a unique opportunity for researchers from various organisations and institutions to meet, share best practice and carry out field experiments.

The field campaign received international support, including the loan of specialised instrumentation from the French Agronomic Research Institute and the provision of satellite data from SSTL, NASA, the European Space Agency, and the space agencies of Algeria, China and Nigeria. Several scientists from China travelled to the UK to participate in the campaign. NCAVEO also benefitted from community involvement from farmers and land owners who gave permission for NCAVEO to use their land.

Over 50 people were involved in the field campaign. The Chilbolton Facility for Atmospheric and Radio Research (CFARR) kindly allowed NCAVEO to use their site as a base for researchers to store and calibrate instruments and carry out measurements. A number of calibration targets (concrete, tarmac and tarpaulin ground sheets) were also set up around the site. Detailed information on the state of the atmosphere was provided from atmospheric instruments located at CFARR. From this base, small groups of researchers visited various pre-determined sites within the 6km x 9km study area to collect data.

Researchers will use the data collected to address three key questions. First, they will be investigating the effect of the atmosphere upon measurements made by sensors on aircraft and satellites. Second, they will be comparing estimates of vegetation amount and the health of crops estimated by the satellite sensors with values measured on the ground using conventional methods. Third, they will be using the remote sensed data to develop improved methods of mapping land cover, especially ways to classify crop types, tree species and the different types of ecologically-important wet grassland found in the Test valley.
